Beiggja, a Norwegian-Dutch ensemble, was born when four distinctive jazz musicians retreated into the Norwegian winter forest, bringing with them only their instruments, a handful of musical ideas, and open minds. In the midst of the silence, they developed a delicate yet fearless collective sound, which was captured on the band’s debut album Morning (HUBRO, 2025).
In Beiggja’s music, Nordic spaciousness, melodic sensitivity, and free improvisation intertwine seamlessly. Kika Sprangers’ expressive saxophone sound and Kjetil Mulelid’s lyrical pianism are grounded by Mats Eilertsen’s warm bass playing and Per Oddvar Johansen’s nuanced drumming. The group has been praised for its intense sense of presence and its pursuit of beauty, and the resulting music has been described as “a balm for the soul.”
In the summer of 2025, Beiggja took to the concert stage for the first time on a tour of the Netherlands, captivating audiences in sold-out performances at venues including Bimhuis in Amsterdam and the Jazz in Duketown Festival. The band’s debut album Morning has received widespread international attention and has been acclaimed as a finely crafted gem of contemporary European jazz.
