Polenta is a band that captivates audiences with its remarkable unity. Violinists Veera Kuisma, Olli Sippola, and Aino Kinnunen, together with guitarist Mikko Malmivaara, form an ensemble that breathes, moves, and dances as one. The folk music energy channelled by these four musicians overflows not only with the vibrant pulse of contemporary folk music and the pure joy of making music together, but also with the depth of Northern traditions.
Following in the footsteps of folk music giants such as JPP, Frigg, and Väsen, Polenta draws inspiration from the rich history of Nordic fiddle music. Swift melodies, delicately woven harmonies, and rhythms bursting with joy and power come together to create a sound that is both timeless and bold. While Polenta’s music is rooted in traditional dance forms such as the polska and schottische, the band is never afraid to venture into uncharted territory—or even launch its audience into orbit around the globe.
An inevitable consequence of a Polenta performance is the audience’s feet “polenting” against the floor. The band’s relentless energy inspires movement of every kind, whether it be tapping, swaying, or surrendering completely to the dance.
Founded in 2019, Polenta has performed across Europe, including appearances at Viljandi Folk Music Festival, Baltimore Fiddle Fair, and Musik Over Præstø Fjord, earning a strong reputation within the Finnish folk music scene. The band’s debut album, Kaustinen Turbo (2021), is a collection of newly arranged folk music from Kaustinen. Karkelo (2024), featuring original compositions by the band members, won Folk Music Album of the Year and was nominated in the Ethno Album of the Year category at the Emma Awards. In spring 2026, the band released its latest album, Matkaaja, featuring new compositions inspired by life on the road. Polenta has also recorded Eteinen, a dance work composed by Petri Prauda, and collaborated with Danish accordionist and singer Justine Boesen.
