Mark Fransman, tenor saxophone & piano
South African multi-instrumentalist and jazz musician Mark Fransman performs solo in the Sibelius Museum.
During his career, Fransman has collaborated with such musicians as Pharoah Sanders, Manu Dibango, Sibongile Khumalo and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and has performed, in addition to festivals in South Africa, at several big jazz festivals in Europe and the United States, including The North Sea Jazz Festival, Leipzig Jazz Festival, Edge of Wrong Festival and the Chicago Jazz Festival.
Mark Fransman learned the musician’s trade from other jazz musicians, such as Hotep Idris Galeta, Errol Dyers and René McLean, residing in South Africa by informal mentoring. In addition to this, he has received a performance diploma in Jazz Studies from the University of Cape Town.
In his current ensemble, the Mark Fransman Homage Trio, Fransman celebrates the most iconic South African jazz musicians seeks to spotlight them as national treasures. Fransman pays homage in the form of original compositions, which are inspired by the musicality and personality specific to each of the musicians. The pieces reflect Fransman’s own personal and professional relationships to the other musicians, many of whom he’s played with or studied under. In the concert at the Sibelius Museum, Mark Fransman performs solo.
Before the concert, Markku “Jazz Preacher” Salo‘s latest book Orjalauluista hiphoppiin (From slave songs to hip hop) (Aviador 2024), will be presented.
