After his wedding in 1892, Sibelius travelled to Karelia to collect runic songs. Lamentations and runic songs, their history and Sibelius’s journey unfold in the Pajolaine folk duos storytelling concert.

Pajolaine Folk Music Duo:

Minna-Liisa Tammela, vocals, lamentations, jouhikko (bowed lyre)
Emmi Kuittinen, vocals, lamentations, kantele

The Pajolaine folk song duo is the work of two professional singers, Emmi Kuittinen and Minna Tammela. It is two human voices, nothing more, nothing less!

Pajolaine is an exploration of the Karelian singing tradition, stemming from singing companionship, where the duo’s gorgeous vocals and inventive minimalist musicianship give space for the tradition to shine. They have been singing together since 2011 and have honed their skills over time, accustomed to performing on big stages and small venues alike.

Pajolaine released an album Raitilla in 2015 and in 2022 they released new music for the silent film Häidenvietto Karjalan runomailla, a hundred-year-old film about Karelian wedding traditions.
