In 2026, it will be 100 years since Otto Andersson was appointed Professor of musicology and folk poetry at Åbo Akademi University. This appointment marked the starting point for what we today know as the university disciplines of musicology and folkloristics, as well as Finland’s foremost music museum, the Sibelius Museum. Throughout the year, various events will be organized to highlight Otto Andersson’s legacy. Among other things, researchers and Swedish-speaking Finnish cultural figures will engage in informal discussions in the Sibelius Museum’s lounge chairs, focusing on music, folk traditions, cultural heritage, and humor. These discussions will be accompanied by concerts and performances. The event will be bilingual, in Swedish and Finnish.
4 February 2026 – In the Lounge Chair: Marianne Maans and Marjaana Puurtinen. Conversation and folk music in the footsteps of Otto Andersson
On the first evening, two prominent folk musicians, Marianne Maans and Marjaana Puurtinen, will take part in a discussion together with Professor of Musicology Johannes Brusila. The discussion will be based on Otto Andersson’s contributions to the field of folk music, while also addressing the broader development of folk music and different ways of performing and understanding folk music today. After a short intermission, the evening will continue with a concert in which Marianne Maans and Marjaana Puurtinen perform music connected to the theme of the evening. The event will be bilingual, in Swedish and Finnish.
