Finland the Land of Opera

What connects the Kalevala, the Finnish Civil War, the Moomins, climate change, and plumbing renovations? All of these, and much more, have been explored in Finland through the medium of opera. The temporary exhibition in the Sibelius Museum, Finland the Land of Opera, explores Finnish opera history.

The exhibition explores, among other topics, the first opera performances in Finland, the beginnings of Finnish opera composition, opera singers, the opera boom of the 1970s, and contemporary works addressing pressing themes in today’s society. Visitors will discover photographs, stage costumes, letters, and various artefacts – and, of course, listen to excerpts from selected works.

Most of the exhibition’s content is drawn from the museum’s own collections, but material has also been borrowed from institutions such as the Finnish National Opera, the Savonlinna Opera Festival, and the Theatre Museum.

The exhibition is in display from June 12th 2025 until January 4th 2026.
