The annual Himera Festival presents two afternoons with three performances that explore space and form working with digital and analog synthesis as a main tool. On Saturday afternoon at the Sibelius museum, Bryan Eubanks and Xavier Lopez present Catherine Lamb’s Wave/Forming (Astrum) for two arpeggiating synthesizers, followed by Shuoxin Tan’s quadrophonic live set. The Sunday matinee at Tehdas Teatteri closes the festival with Eubanks’ and Lopez’ own piece Natural Realms for synthesis, feedback, percussion, saxophone.

Catherine Lamb: Wave/Forming (Astrum), 2018
Xavier Lopez & Bryan Eubanks: 2 arpeggiating synthesizers

An electronic piece made in 2018, unique in Catherine Lamb’s work, after a commission in response to her interest in the duo Natural Realms – where sequenced harmonic patterns in simple relationships form the basis for improvisation. Wave/Forming (Astrum) continues some of Lamb’s experimentation with pointillism, in which short articulations — points — interact and build towards lines that lengthen into what Lamb calls a ‘more total form’. As Laura Tunbridge writes: “Surface figures are spirited away yet patterns emerge in time, through long arcs of harmonic transformation, and in space, as sounds shift between foreground and background of the stereo fields. In a spirit of true collaboration the composer and performers developed unique tools and methods to play this music that can never be the same but never deviate too far from a defining point of reference”. A recording of the piece was released by the London label All That Dust in 2020.

Born in Beijing, since 2020 living and working as a composer and sound artist in Cologne. Her research currently focuses on lacanian topology, algorithmic acoustics, and mathematical formalisation.

How to apply „purloined“ theoretical knowledge into artistic practice is her curiosity. She approaches and works between composition and improvisation, which often happens in specific space, intertwined with the exploration of physical movement and auditory perception.

Her work has been released on labels such as SUPERPANG, Infant Tree and Zoomin’ Night, compilations on labels Sub Rosa and reiheM.
