Fredagar på Sibbe: Jorge da Rocha

Jorge da Rocha (b. 1980) is a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist originally hailing from Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal. Since 2005 he has been an active member in Barcelona’s vibrant music scene, playing and recording in a number of projects and with various musicians such as Mosaico Jazz Trio and with Samantha de Siena among others. 

da Rocha graduated from Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona where he had the opportunity to do master classes with great musicians such as Dave Holland, Eddie Gomez, Ben Street, Pat Metheny and Seamus Blake. Jorge is a regular musician in Barcelona’s musical scene and has performed in prestigious clubs and festivals, including Barcelona’s Voll-damm International Jazz Festival (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). 

In 2016 Jorge recorded the first album of his solo career “These are a few of my favorite songs”. It was recorded only with two instruments: double bass and voice, an album in which Jorge plays songs from some of his favorite artists like Radiohead, Björk, Massive Attack and the Portuguese songwriter Zeca Afonso.  

In 2017 Jorge played in different venues and festivals in Europe: Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland and Italy and published his second album “To Drop and Let Go”. A very special album with his own compositions recorded only with double bass and voice.  

In 2020 Jorge published his third album, “BLAU – Being Lost As Usual” – in which Jorge explores self-production and his multi-instrumental facet, mixing the acoustic and electronic worlds. This album had its premiere at the showcase festival Mercat de Música Viva de Vic in Barcelona. 

Jorge is also dedicated to the composition of pieces for short films and in 2021 he also created the original music for the show “The Very Last Northern White Rhino” by the choreographer Gastón Core, a piece premiered at the GREC Festival in Barcelona.
