Selma Savolainen, known for her unprejudiced musicianship and impressive sound, will present her band Horror Vacui at the Turku Jazz Festival on Wednesday night!

Selma Savolainen, also known from the vocal group Signe, has been praised as a singer who has taken Finnish vocal jazz to a new level. Savolainen’s English-language songs are influenced not only by modern jazz but also by alternative singer-songwriter styles. The artist, who was awarded the Pori Jazz Rising Talent award among other things, uses her voice as an instrument of equal importance among others. In her compositions, each player and instrument has its own place and moment.

Savolainen’s debut album, Horror Vacui, was released in May 2023 by Whirlwind Recordings, a British label that releases some of the most exciting albums in contemporary jazz. Savolainen has composed and arranged the music especially for the musicians of her sextet of young, cutting-edge musicians. In reference to the band’s name, the song series deals with the fear of emptiness, abandonment and surprising discoveries.
