Nayab Noor Ikram – Waves of Waves

An exhibition by Ålandic artist Nayab Noor Ikram will be on display at the Sibelius Museum from 14 April. Waves of Waves is her first solo museum exhibition in Finland. The exhibition explores cultural identity through care, play and tension in different social contexts through film and sound installations. The exhibition is on display until 3 September.

Nayab Noor Ikram (b.1992) is a Turku-based photographer and visual artist of Åland’s Pakistani diaspora. Ikram works with concepts that deal with the sense of betweenness, cultural identity, collective memory and post-internet. She explores the concepts through symbolism, rituals and abstract forms.

Ikram has a degree in media studies, specialising in photography, from Novia University of Applied Sciences in Jakobstad, Finland. She has had several solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions where her work has recently been exhibited at the Helsinki Art Museum (Finland, 2023), Gerðarsafn, (Iceland, 2022), Åland Art Museum (Åland, 2022), Mänttä Visual Arts Festival (Finland, 2021), Västerås Art Museum (Sweden, 2020-2021) and the European Parliament (BE, 2020). In 2019 she was awarded a cultural prize from the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, and in 2022 an art prize from the Anna-Lena Dreijer Art Fund in Åland.

You may also visit the exhibition during the summer guided by the artist herself. Short artist talks of about 15 minutes are included in the price of the museum ticket and are available in English or Swedish as required.
